Data streams relevant for energy use in buildings are increasing. Many households have “smart” meters in place or are installing smart thermostats or smart plugs; and the first Internet of things (IoT) applications are entering households. We see similar developments in commercial buildings.
This wealth of data provides new opportunities to better understand and control energy use in buildings. Significant energy saving potentials are claimed. Nevertheless, there are also serious challenges, like privacy and cybersecurity issues, and the variety of platforms.

ATLANTA – More than 30 percent energy savings can be achieved using the 2016 version of Standard 90.1, according to recent analysis conducted by Pacific Northwest National Laboratories (PNNL) in support of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Building Energy Codes Programme.

Evaluating New York City's Multifamily Building Energy Data for Savings Opportunities - Retrofitting Affordability
This report by the Building Energy Exchange (BEEx), analyses available data in the New York City multifamily (MF) building sector to identify which buildings, and which energy efficiency retrofit measures, have the greatest potential for carbon reduction, and how these benefits relate to affordability and the City’s climate action plan.

Die Studie beschäftigt sich damit, welche Einsparungen durch energieeffiziente Wohnhäuser in der Praxis tatsächlich erreichbar sind. Dafür wurden die Verbrauchskennwerte energetisch sanierter und neuer Ein- und Mehrfamilienhäuser ausgewertet. Die 121 untersuchten Effizienzhäuser umfassen 50 neue Ein- und Zweifamilienhäuser, 7 neue Mehrfamilienhäuser, 46 energetisch sanierte Ein- und Zweifamilienhäuser und 18 energetisch sanierte Mehrfamilienhäuser. Alle Häuser haben eine gedämmte Gebäudehülle und eine effiziente Anlagentechnik.

In 2014, it was estimated that 10.5 TWh of electricity consumption in England was consumed by domestic cold appliances, an equivalent to 15.6% of the total electricity consumed by household domestic appliances. Previous research, based on a relatively small sample, found that around 9% of domestic cold appliances may be over-consuming.
This study is based on a large scale field trial -998 appliances monitored in 766 properties across England- with electricity consumption and temperature data collected over a 7 day period and occupant interviews.

SmarterHouse, a project of the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), is a residential energy savings guide. Following a review of measures to tighten up the building shell itself, the tool focuses on major appliances, heating equipment, air conditioning, lighting, and electronics—and how the energy use of those products can be reduced.

“Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts: The Case for a Systems Approach to Energy Efficiency”, released by the Alliance to Save Energy, is the “Systems Efficiency Initiative (SEI) Year 1 Report”. The report characterises the potential benefits of a building systems approach and prioritises areas for further technical and policy research.

Until the end of 2015 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) can benefit from the funding of projects to improve energy efficiency in the company.
Funding is offered in the form of grants for partial repayment of bank loans channeled through the bank on the basis of the cooperation agreement concluded with the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW).
