Can a building produce more energy than it consumes, exclusively from renewable sources? Certainly! This is demonstrated by the experience of Casa SN (named after its owners Sara and Nicola Berlanda) which has recently become the first building in Europe - and Italy - to be certified under the Zero Energy standard of the International Living Future Institute (ILFI).

This 600 square-metre plot was used to erect a new service centre that would not only encompass a bank branch but also consultation rooms for customers and staff. Overall the building spans a total usable floor area of 1800 square metres. The energy consultant used dynamic computer simulations and local climate records to design the building and select materials.

The university city of Freiburg is home to an innovative city hall that is now the biggest surplus-energy building in Europe. The building boasts outstanding thermal insulation that allows for low-temperature heating and high-temperature cooling. To minimise energy demand, the building is fitted with a ventilation system that uses heat recovery. The building is heated and cooled efficiently by using energy in the ground water.

When Elobau conducted a study for its new production building, one key consideration was its energy vision: that if possible, the new facility should rely entirely on renewable energy. The brief was not just to see if it would be possible to achieve a positive primary energy rating, but also to be as autonomous as possible in terms of heating, cooling and electricity.

Implementing Rapid and Dramatic Carbon Reductions in the Global Built Environment
Over the next 4 decades, the world is projected to construct 230 billion square meters (2.5 trillion square feet) of buildings, an area roughly equal to the current worldwide building stock, or the equivalent of adding another New York City to the planet every 34 days.

Built in 2019, the Eisbärhaus was designed as a passive building comprising two units. Building materials were selected according to guidelines provided by the Austrian environmental association Umweltverband Vorarlberger Gemeindehaus. All exterior walls consist of wooden timbers treated with cellulose to provide thermal insulation (layer thickness: 42cm).

The Aktiv-Stadthaus in Frankfurt am Main is the first large apartment building in a city to be built according to the Efficiency House Plus standard. The first residents moved in during the summer of 2015. The aim of its innovative energy concept is to generate more renewable energy over the space of a year than is used by the building itself.

ATELIER is a smart city project that demonstrates Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) within 8 European cities with sustainability and carbon neutrality as guiding ambitions. Amsterdam and Bilbao are the Lighthouse cities that will generate an energy surplus of 1340 MWh of primary energy, prevent 1,7 kt of CO2- and 23 t of NOx-emissions, and invest 156 mln Euros to realise their PEDs.

The aim of this 4-year project is to show that it is possible to transform nearly-zero energy buildings into positive energy buildings (PEBs). This means that a building which is producing the majority of the renewable energy it uses itself, after refurbishment, will be producing more energy than it actually needs. The technologies will be tested in 4 climatic zones, EnergyVille/VITO investigates the scale-up of buildings into PEBs and is involved in the Belgian demo set up together with Cordium, the social housing company in Hasselt.
