Over the past few months, Swiss Renova has been renovating a multifamily structure dating back to 1963, in line with the passive housing standard. The Swiss construction company paid particular attention to sustainability and energy efficiency, with Balco Balkonkonstruktionen integrating 240 special solar modules into the building’s 96 balconies.

This study, commissioned and supervised by the European Commission’s (EC) Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER), provides technical support to investigate the feasibility of introducing optional building renovation passports (BRPs) in the EU. In particular, pursuant to Article 19a of the EPBD, this study evaluates the relevance, feasibility and potential impact of BRPs. This work is carried out in close consultation with stakeholders and in collaboration with leading experts, including IFEU and the Shift Project.

The decision-making process is one of the biggest challenges for deep renovation: difficulty to reach an agreement between parts, lack of sufficient financing schemes, and no clear vision of expected results, just to mention a few issues. Plug and play options help to overcome some of these concerns, as they usually enable a significant revalorisation of the property through a cost-effective and fast deep retrofitting.
