FINERPOL project partners identified around 100 best practices around the world of financial instruments for energy efficiency and renewable energy and evaluated them according to criteria developed together by the partnership. These criteria included what each initiative aimed to achieve, who was involved, its financial performance, and impact on reducing carbon emissions.

The disruptive character of digital technologies and startups has been acknowledged by the banks themselves, but the effects of renewable energy crowdfunding on traditional banking do more than pose a threat
Crowdfunding is considered by some experts to have the same effect on banks as Uber has on taxis. Green energy crowdfunding is no exception: the process is 100% digital and lets everybody become an investor or request funding for a sustainable project, without going through the banks.

BPIE analysed both EU and non-EU funding streams available in the region that could be used to improve the energy efficiency of the building stock. The analysis found that both funding supply into the region and demand coming from the region should be stepped up.

Achieving a decarbonised building stock by 2050 will require renovation at a faster pace and considerable investment, estimated at around €60-100 billion annually up to 2020, and more thereafter. Public funding alone cannot meet this requirement, therefore it needs to be used in a way that maximises private investment.
In this new policy factsheet, BPIE illustrates examples of financing schemes that debunk the myth that attracting private investment in building renovation is difficult. Public funding can play a key role in leveraging private investment.
