Low Energy Apartment Futures (LEAF) was a three year project that looked to improve the energy efficiency of multi-occupancy apartment blocks by overcoming the barriers experienced during the retrofit process. The project ran from March 2013 to March 2016 and was funded by the EU’s Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE) programme and local organisations in each country.

Low Energy Apartment Futures (LEAF) was a three year project that looked to improve the energy efficiency of multi-occupancy apartment blocks by overcoming the barriers experienced during the retrofit process. Retrofit of this type of building is essential to meet climate change targets and reduce fuel poverty as approximately 43% of Europeans live in flats[1]. However, this type of building is notoriously difficult to retrofit due to short-comings of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and the challenges of engaging multiple owners.

The workshop: "La rénovation des bâtiments, moteur du modèle énergétique français" took place 6 November, 2014 in Paris, France. The results are now available in the seventh issue of the French Energy-Building Foundation (Fondation Bâtiment-Energie) newsletter of February 2015.The event focused on the energy renovation of commercial buildings and underlined the need to establish an energy renovation plan to increase the value of real estate. A round table discussion and the reporting of three successful renovation case studies tried to answer to the following questions:

The FP7-project 3ENCULT bridges the gap between conservation and climate protection, which is not a contradiction at all: historic buildings will only survive if maintained as living space – and energy-efficient retrofit can improve structural protection and “comfort” both for users and heritage collections. Reducing the energy demand by Factor 4 to 10 is feasible, if a multidisciplinary approach guarantees high-quality energy-efficiency-solutions, targeted and adapted to the specific case.

This is one of the SUSTAINCO project's case studies. Garwnant Visitor Centre in Wales is a publicly owned site originally consisting of a single stone building. The aim of this development was to add a new building and re-develop the old one, making best use of its natural surroundings and resources including materials, light and energy.
