This extension to a School of Design & Environment building at the National University of Singapore is an outstanding example of a net zero-energy building (NZEB) in the tropics. The five-storey building is home to labs, design studios and workshops used by the departments of architecture and design. Construction of the building was optimised to facilitate lateral ventilation and comfortable natural light. An integral aspect of net zero-energy consumption is that conventional approaches to air conditioning have to be challenged.

Cooling demand is expected to increase almost 60% by 2030 in Europe. District cooling (DC) can support satisfying this demand in a sustainable way by utilising the most efficient cooling supply options available and distributing the produced cooling to consumers rather than using stand‐alone, often inefficient and poorly maintained distributed systems. This also has the potential to significantly decrease primary energy consumption.

The current development in building energy efficiency towards nZEB buildings represents a number of new challenges to design and construction. One of these major challenges is the increased need for cooling in these highly insulated and airtight buildings, which is not only present in the summer period but also in the shoulder seasons and in offices even in midwinter. Ventilative cooling can be an energy efficient solution to address this cooling challenge in buildings.

The Passive House standard was defined and put into practice for the first time in Darmstadt in 1991 almost three decades ago. Next October 2019, the 23rd International Passive House Conference will take place for the first time outside Europe, in Gaobeidian, China. Before that, in May this year the passive-house pioneering city of Heidelberg hosted the Better Building!

  The IEA estimates that by 2050 energy demand from space cooling will triple. Entering into force in 2019, the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol seeks to reduce the global warming impacts of air conditioners and refrigerators through reducing the use of refrigerants with strong global warming effects. Such a shift in refrigerant offers a great opportunity for energy efficiency improvements during appliance re-engineering.
