In 2014, it was estimated that 10.5 TWh of electricity consumption in England was consumed by domestic cold appliances, an equivalent to 15.6% of the total electricity consumed by household domestic appliances. Previous research, based on a relatively small sample, found that around 9% of domestic cold appliances may be over-consuming.
This study is based on a large scale field trial -998 appliances monitored in 766 properties across England- with electricity consumption and temperature data collected over a 7 day period and occupant interviews.

METIS is a mathematical model which can provide highly detailed analysis of the whole European energy system for electricity, gas and heat. It can simulate the operation of both energy systems and markets for electricity gas and heat on an hourly basis for a whole year, while also factoring in uncertainties like weather variations. For example, it can analyse the impact of higher shares of renewable energy down to the hour.
The model can be used at EU country or regional level, right down to the 276 economic regions in the EU which are used by analysts.

ATLANTA – A smart grid standard published earlier this year by ASHRAE and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has been approved as an International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) standard.
ANSI/ASHRAE/NEMA Standard 201-2016, Facility Smart Grid Information Model (FSGIM), provides a common basis for electrical energy consumers to describe, manage and communicate about electrical energy consumptions and forecasts.

On 6 December 2016, Urs Hölzle, Senior Vice President for Technical Infrastructure at Google, announced that in 2017 Google will reach 100% renewable energy for its global operations — including both Google data centers and offices.
In his article at the Google Blog, he writes:
"We were one of the first corporations to create large-scale, long-term contracts to buy renewable energy directly; we signed our first agreement to purchase all the electricity from a 114-megawatt wind farm in Iowa, in 2010.

On 30 November 2016, the European Commission will launch a legislative package on energy. This represents a ‘once-in-a-decade’ set of reforms to the design of electricity markets, to renewables and energy efficiency targets and policies, and to the governance rules for planning and reporting on climate and energy. The “jumbo” package of at least 8 legislative initiatives is likely to run to over 1,000 pages.
