  During the EU Sustainable Energy Week, the EIP-SCC held a series of practical Action Cluster Meetings bundled into a one-day event entitled « Building a market for Smart Cities and Communities ».    The gathering was part of ongoing efforts to foster cross-sector collaboration to deliver a solid, viable market which is attractive to investors.

Cities represent three quarters of energy consumption and 80% of CO2 emissions worldwide, and with urbanisation expected to continue, a growing number of ‘Lighthouse’ cities across Europe have taken up the challenge of testing new ‘smart’ energy-saving solutions in large-scale test-beds under the impulse of European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

The EU funded CITYOPT project (Holistic simulation and optimization of energy systems in Smart Cities) aims to make cities smarter through applications and guidelines supporting efficient planning, detailed design and operation of energy systems in urban districts. The specific target is to engage users with the new CITYOPT applications, create new partnerships connecting city leaders and stakeholders and create new business models for decision support systems for energy efficient neighbourhoods.

The session will focus on the replication potential of the energy-related smart solutions being implemented in the SCC1 Lighthouse cities.   The Smart Cities and Communities lighthouse projects are funded by the European Commission through the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, with the aim of bringing together cities, industry and citizens to demonstrate solutions and business models that can be scaled up and replicated, and that lead to measurable benefits in energy and resource efficiency, new markets and new jobs.

A smarter way to delivering large-scale change: the CITyFiED Methodology for Sustainable Urban Renovation at district level   Sustainable urban renovation is complex, particularly with respect to the decision making process, where a number of key stakeholders and several aspects need to be considered simultaneously. Evaluating and selecting alternative scenarios or measures to be implemented can be a substantial use of time and resources for cities.

European ‘Energy Days’ kick started in Lund, Sweden   An early start to celebrating the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) ‘energy days’ began in Lund, Sweden, with an open invitation for politicians, municipal officials, researchers and more to discuss sustainable district renewal.    Held on 17 May, the CITyFiED project demonstration site and partners made a perfect tangible example for exchanging some inspirational ideas about how to build a sustainable city.
