The Commission adopted today a draft mandate to engage -- on behalf of the European Union in the negotiations to modernise the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) -- a plurilateral trade and investment agreement applicable to the energy sector to which the EU is part. These negotiations aim to revise the provisions of the Treaty in a way to reflect the EU’s reformed approach on investment protection and achieve greater legal certainty and clarity of the rules applicable to the protection of investments.

The Covenant of Mayors Investment Forum was first launched in 2014. In February 2019 a two-day event was held in which significant achievements and challenges in the evolution of this initiative were reviewed. Over 700 participants gathered for the event and alongside networking spaces, keynote speeches, and panel discussions, 30 research and implementation projects concerning sustainable energy and climate adaptation were presented.

New rules making the EU's electricity market fit for the future and putting the consumer at the centre of the energy transition have been signed off by the European Parliament on 26 March; it is an important step in enabling the European Union and its Member States to embrace the clean energy transition, follow up on the already adopted 2030 climate legislation and meet the Paris Agreement commitments.

Partnership for New Energy Leadership (PANEL) 2050 was funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme to promote a low-carbon community in Europe by 2050.

The INTAS project started in March 2016. It addresses the need to support European Market Surveillances Authorities (MSAs) deliver compliance with Ecodesign requirements for large industrial products, specifically transformers and fans.   By acknowledging the current lack of expertise, experience, and resources available across Europe for this type of testing, INTAS provides technical and cooperative support, as well as capacity building activities, to MSAs in charge of enforcing Ecodesign regulations.

Funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme, the QualitEE project aims to increase investment in energy efficiency services in the building sector within the EU and improve trust in service providers. This will be achieved by developing quality assessment criteria and implementing quality assurance schemes.

Every year the European Commission (Directorate-General for Energy and EASME) organises the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) – one of the biggest events dedicated to renewables and efficient energy use in Europe. The 2018 edition attracted more than 2500 participants. The theme for 2019 is “Shaping Europe’s energy future” and it will cover a series of activities with an EU-wide scope. EUSEW will take place during the third week of June and include the EUSEW Policy Conference in Brussels from 18 to 20 June.
