The multi-family house from the turn of the century was saved from demolition and extensively renovated. 6 apartments were set up with the latest technology and low energy consumption. The usable building fabric was carefully renovated and new elements added accordingly.   The comprehensive renovation enables comfort standards from the new building in the guise of an old building:

Concept and objectives:   The building integrated photovoltaics sector can benefit from innovations in construction and solar energy alike, even moreso when the two are in sync.   In the PVadapt project, combined innovations in modular construction and modular photovoltaics will lead to the creation of an adaptable and multifunctional BIPV system of substantially lower cost than conventional solutions.

On the outskirts of Aarhus lies Lisbjerg Bakke, a 4,100m2 hybrid timber building and winner of the 2014 ‘sustainable social housing of the future’ competition.   In a joint venture between the architects and engineers, the full lifecycle of the building has been taken into consideration from the outset, with a flexible design that allows the reconfiguration of the building into new layouts or office space, and building components that can be easily upgraded.

Before the refurbishment started, the local authority had around 1,500 bedsits right across the city. Known as zero-bed units, they were small – usually no more than 26 square metres – and as they aged, they became progressively less attractive to tenants.   Moreover, the more unattractive the location, the more ‘de-tenanted’ they became. So began a vicious cycle of vacancy, dilapidation and social deterioration.

The Kohlerhaus, a building dating back to the 14th century, was renovated to accommodate 10 apartments with the high standards of comfort and efficiency. The historical research carried out by the architect revealed the rich past of the building, that served as priest house, hotel or guest house. The retrofit of the building included external insulation the wall with reed mats, new replica windows and new building services (radiating heating and mechanical ventilation).

Concept:   The EU’s building stock is relatively old. Half of all homes in most EU countries were built pre-1970 and before the first thermal regulations.   This is why upgrading the energy efficiency of the building envelope – the physical barrier between indoor and unconditioned environment – is important.

The new CHARIER headquarters in Coueron, was developed to bring the location of business decisions closer to the main partners and customers of the company.   The main features of the building, designed by Paumier Architectes, aims to represent the company specificities and strengths. In fact, the composition of the construction is around a courtyard that highlights the know-how of the company adjoining the building's exhibition hall.

This timber-framed building is located in Saint-Samson-la-Poterie in the Oise region (northern France), over Paris, and especially in the natural region called "Pays de Bray".   It was the barn of a landlord housing of the 17th century and it has recently been retrofitted and restored by the owner himself. A careful work on the materials and on the execution was made.

The scope of the project is to promote, though architecture, the set-up of a collaborative community living in passive houses. In fact, the building has shared facilities, encouraging social contacts and individual space in a community managed the residents.   Each household is independent, but there is a common space for activities, such as crafts, guest rooms, and the provision by the community of three meals per week. As far as possible the scheme uses natural building materials.
