Against the background of climate change and increasing environmental awareness, new build construction is booming in some regions, while others face the challenge of retrofitting whole districts. In short: there has never been a better time to future-proof our building stock. The recent 23rd annual International Passive House Conference in Gaobeidian, China not only highlighted the international applicability of the Passive House standard, but also the enormous opportunity it presents to reduce CO2 emissions in the building sector.

This detached house represents the designer’s ambition to make this type of housing accessible to all and thus drastically reduce pollution related to buildings. The house is 100% autonomous thanks to its field of 96 m² bifacial photovoltaic panels (sized for two buildings) and its battery park. Production of photovoltaic panels = 19.2 kW peak battery storage capacity 15 kW. Here are the peculiarities of this house:

This is the first block of housing certified in Spain built in 2017 under the Passivhaus standard, and therefore has a demand for heating below 15kWh / m2a, and a heating load of 10W / m2.   This implies that a floor of 75m2 will have a heating load of only 750W, so with a hair dryer there would be enough to heat two houses.   To achieve this the following principles have been applied:

Deep ecological retrofit of two Victorian townhouses Chorlton, Manchester Completed: Autumn/winter 2018 Standard: Enerphit Plus -£43 per year (estimated total energy costs)   This Victorian property in the centre of Chorlton had spent many years serving as 5 apartments. During this time many original features had been lost. The proposal is to return to the original use of two semi-detached homes and reinstate the beautiful original façade.

The developers and architects of this project have set very high goals. With the Bolueta building, they wanted to set a new Passive House record and at the same time ensure the quality of the building through certification. Bolueta in the Spanish city of Bilbao is now the tallest Passive House building in the world. The recently issued certificate is proof of its highly energy efficient Passive House Standard construction.
