With this spirit of renaissance in our hearts, there has never been a better time to rethink and renovate the buildings that shelter us. Creating a renovation wave in Europe now is key to any economic recovery and will be central to getting the EU back on its feet.

With the objective of safeguarding the wellbeing of EU citizens by delivering improvements in Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), the Informal IEQ Gathering of eight European industry associations is proud to present its Healthy Buildings for All Manifesto.

27 European heads of state are discussing the Commission’s proposal for a €1.85 trillion COVID-19 recovery budget. It is a huge sum: €1.1 trillion from the member states themselves and €750 billion to be borrowed on the capital markets. But it is dwarfed by something which is all around us and which we take for granted: buildings.

Currently, buildings account for 40% of total energy consumption and around 75% of them are energy inefficient, with an annual renovating rate around 0.4-1.2%. EU has established legislative frameworks as EPBD (directive 2010/31/EU and update) and EED (2012/27/EU) in order to increase the energy performance of the buildings and has required the nearly zero energy building (nZEB) target for public buildings starting from January 2019.
