The CoNZEBs project formed the main part of a session at the IAQVEC conference in Bari in September 2019. CoNZEBs project partner held in total 6 presentations including a project overview, different project results and one of the national exemplary NZEB buildings presented in the end-user brochure. The papers are published as open source documents in IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering, Volume 609.

On 13 June 2019 the national German CoNZEBs event was held in Saalbau Gutleut in Frankfurt. More than 110 practitioners and decision makers attended the event organised as a mix of presentations of nearly zero-energy buildings and beyond case studies and measures to reduce the construction costs.

Organised by A2A Calore & Servizi and Euroheat & Power/DHC+, this event will showcase the latest technology developments on digitalisation in district heating and cooling and the innovations of TEMPO in terms of digital solutions for low-temperature networks.

An increased energy performance of buildings not only reduces energy costs and CO2 emissions, but creates jobs, increases the comfort and health of its occupants and brings environmental benefits in terms of improved air quality. Valuing these multiple benefits is key to making investment decision more viable and thus accelerating building renovation.

It is clear that we need to build a more sustainable world. Groups of people from all different areas are working towards this goal. However, so often we work in silos, trying to leverage our specific expertise only. The problem is that climate change is complex. The challenges we face and transformation we need impact a huge variety of actors, topics and fields in an interrelated way. These are not separated by expertise or field, so our approach to overcoming climate-related challenges can’t be siloed either.

The building and industry sectors combined represent about 85% of Europe’s CO2 emissions and about 70% of final energy use. Increasing energy efficiency and reducing energy demand is thus a key strategy to reducing carbon emissions from these sectors. Energy efficiency measures typically pay for themselves over time, but nevertheless, businesses often prioritise other types of investments in lieu of energy saving projects.
