 Das School of the Future-Projekt wurde im Jahr 2011 als Demonstrationsprojekt im 7. Forschungsrahmenprogramm der Europäischen Union gestartet. Der zugehörige Förderaufruf hatte als Schwerpunkt „Demonstration von Energieeffizienz durch die Sanierung von Gebäuden“. Dabei sollten ganzheitliche Sanierungsmaßnahmen an Gebäuden mit hohem Multiplikationspotential für weite Gebiete Europas geplant, durchgeführt und evaluiert werden. Der Heizenergieverbrauch für die Raumkonditionierung der Gebäude sollte um mindestens 75 % durch die Sanierung reduziert werden.

In 2011, the 'School of the Future' project was launched as a demonstration project in the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Union. The related call for applications focused on the 'Demonstration of Energy Efficiency through Retrofitting of Buildings'. Project goals included design, implementation and evaluation of holistic renovation measures in buildings with a high replication potential for large regions of Europe.

Throughout the Recast Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) it is requested that “the public sector in each Member State should lead the way in the field of energy performance of buildings” and “buildings occupied by public authorities and buildings frequently visited by the public should set an example”. Among the most promising public building types to act as lighthouse projects are school buildings.

“Treet”, a timber high rise building in Bergen, Norway now holds the world’s record for wood construction. The Norwegian housing association Bergen- og omegn boligbyggelag (BOB), set out to build a sustainable housing project but when faced with building restrictions and a nearby bridge, it was decided to use wood. The project was pitched as a nod to wood heritage with the added prestige of breaking a world record for wood construction, which resulted in the political support needed to get to 14 storeys.

Investor Confidence Project (ICP) Europe is developing a suite of building energy renovation roadmaps - Energy Performance Protocols - that aim to reduce transaction costs by assembling existing standards and practices into a consistent and transparent process. These tools then enable a marketplace for building owners, project developers, utilities, public programmes and investors to trade in standardised energy efficiency projects.
