Five years have almost passed from that morning in January 2015 when REMOURBAN started taking its first steps in the smart renovation of the cities of Nottingham (UK), Tepebaşi (Turkey) and Valladolid (Spain).

The EIP-SCC has launched a guidance package to help towns and cities move towards a sustainable future. The toolbox is the fruit of many European projects, including REMOURBAN.
In early May the Committee of Regions held a high-level event to launch the Smart city Guidance Package, a roadmap for integrated planning and implementation for Smart City projects.

Municipal staff in Valladolid, Spain, are going electric in their daily work. With a fleet of 13 e-cars, the municipality is leading by example in adopting a more ecological behaviour thanks to EU-funded project REMOURBAN.

Cities belong to their citizens; comprising an economic, social and cultural asset for which all are responsible of taking care of in order to assure the future of the following generations. Considering this premise, cities are the most important growth pole of the European Union, while more than two thirds of the European population lives in urban areas and this share continues to grow. Due to their high density, cities offer a huge potential for improving sustainability towards a carbon-neutral new concept of life.

A Smart City is a city where life has become very easy.
Bus tickets can be bought directly from an App while private vehicles are replaced by cars and bikes shared by the public. Buses and cars don’t run on gas or other conventional fuels but are powered by electricity. Charging infrastructures are disseminated all around the city, so there is no need to go to the gas tank anymore! Consequences of all these improvements in mobility are the reduction of energy consumption and CO2 emissions and the reduction of the door-to-door journey time.
