The Upgrade DH project will support and initiate the upgrading process of eight district heating demo cases in Europe in the following countries: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Denmark, Croatia, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, and The Netherlands and will provide the basis for replication to other cities.

The first global energy storage conference held in Paris in 2014 concluded that to achieve the European goal of energy-neutral built environment in 2050, harvesting, converting and storing seasonal energy is essential. The 2020 climate and energy package calls for a substantial increase in renewable energy by 2020.

Operations at the coal-fired cogeneration plant KVV6 at Värtaverket, which has supplied heat and electricity to Stockholmers since 1989, ground to a halt on 16 April. This event made no ripples in the coronavirus-dominated media mix, but it was worth mentioning. Now that the last remaining facility of this type in Sweden’s capital has been shut down, the city's has come much closer to its ambitious target of being fossil fuel-free by 2040.

The SWS-HEATING project will develop an innovative seasonal thermal energy storage (STES) unit with a novel storage material and creative configuration, i.e. a sorbent material embedded in a compact multi-modular sorption STES unit. This will allow to store and shift the harvested solar energy available abundantly during the summer to the less sunny and colder winter period thus covering a large fraction of heating and domestic hot water demand in buildings.

The EU Energy Efficiency Directive requires Member States to submit long-term strategies for mobilising investment in the renovation of building stock within their National Energy Efficiency Plans. Recent changes to the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) require the adoption of long-term renovation strategies as part of the National Energy and Climate Plans. The amended EPBD shows a clearer path towards achieving low- and zero-emission building stock in the EU by 2050, underpinned by national roadmaps and public and private investment.
