“With the knowledge database, we make available valuable expertise and numerous publications, which we produced in cooperation with national and international partners in more than two decades. It merges the results of the three EU funded SDH projects SDHtake-off, SDHplus and SDHp2m as well as several national projects,” says Thomas Pauschinger from the Steinbeis Research Institute Solites, coordinator of the SDHp2m project.

This report supports the Building Efficiency Accelerator (BEA) and the District Energy in Cities Initiative, two initiatives under Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL). While the focus is on the City of Belgrade, the aim of this report is to support all public authorities and agencies developing and implementing integrated approaches to both energy efficiency in buildings and district energy supply. It provides guidance to decision-makers in Belgrade, while presenting universal recommendations to align district energy and energy efficiency in buildings.

The connection of a solar thermal (ST) façade system to a district heating system allows for the direct use of ST heat in the building while taking profit from the network for delivery/selling of excess heat and purchase of heat during periods of underproduction. The use of unglazed collectors for low-intrusive architectural interaction in façades is discussed.

In most cases, building service designers choose between Solar thermal (ST) and District Heating (DH) technologies for their integration in buildings. By doing so, only a fraction of the buildings within a particular district is used for ST, while at the same time energy intensity in DH networks can be reduced. In some cases, building-integrated solar thermal systems are connected to DH networks by means of dedicated pipes. In all these cases, sub-optimal situations are reached with lower fraction of renewable heat, reduced network strength and/or additional heat losses.

Heat Roadmap Europe 4 is a Horizon 2020 funded research project, with a consortium of 23 partners, running from 2016 until 2019. Its main goal is to study the heating and cooling sector in Europe by quantifying the effects of increased energy efficiency on both the demand and supply side, in terms of energy consumption, environmental impacts and costs.

District heating (DH) systems are key systems for the de-carbonization of heating energy in European Cities. In order to allow for this transition, while guaranteeing competitive energy costs, conversion of DHs is required.
DH operation temperature needs to be reduced in order to increase the performance of renewable systems and operation criteria needs to be adopted for the introduction of weather-dependent, distributed heat sources such as solar systems.
