ince September 2017, consumer organizations in 6 European countries have guided consumers through all the stages leading to the purchase of domestic renewable and efficient energy technologies. To facilitate the consumer journey, the project launched group purchases, which lowered the costs of the equipment and guaranteed a fair deal for consumers.

Could you describe the project and its objectives?
The objectives of the NEWCOM project are twofold. First, we are supporting the development of training schemes for enabling construction workers and building professionals to build according to the nearly zero-energy building standard and second, we are preparing a basis for the mutual recognition of the developed training schemes.

Understanding how people decide to use less energy at home or at work is crucial to boost virtuous behaviours. Our reaction to any novelty is so complex that a lot of socio-psychological research has been done to try to make it more predictable.
Social norms and influences, the ways we become accustomed to an external stimulus and manage our natural competitive instinct (both towards ourselves and the others) are among the factors to be analysed to characterise and support energy-saving habits.

The H2020 Penny Project - Psychological social & financial barriers to energy efficiency - applies a behavioural science approach to better understand individual behaviour in the domain of energy efficiency. In particular, the project seeks to advance the understanding of consumer decisions in relation to both the use of energy and the adoption of energy-efficient technologies.
