The Passive House standard was defined and put into practice for the first time in Darmstadt in 1991 almost three decades ago. Next October 2019, the 23rd International Passive House Conference will take place for the first time outside Europe, in Gaobeidian, China. Before that, in May this year the passive-house pioneering city of Heidelberg hosted the Better Building!

The Covenant of Mayors Investment Forum was first launched in 2014. In February 2019 a two-day event was held in which significant achievements and challenges in the evolution of this initiative were reviewed. Over 700 participants gathered for the event and alongside networking spaces, keynote speeches, and panel discussions, 30 research and implementation projects concerning sustainable energy and climate adaptation were presented.

The Club of Rome’s first report and early whistle-blowers’ calls from the late 1960s on the Earth’s environmental stress, are today backed by concrete facts and data on the need for change. A significant 40 % of energy use relates to construction and buildings, a key element of the equation. The current energy demand of existing building stock needs to be drastically reduced.

While focusing in energy efficiency of buildings, Build UP portal acknowledge the relevance of an integrated approach to the overarching goal of reducing environmental footprint of buildings. The rational and efficient use of materials and construction systems and the minimization of waste production from the construction sector are essential target areas with high potential of amelioration of critical indicators.
