Rubber boots and spades stood ready for a special premiere: In July 2016, construction works began on the world's first Passive House hospital in the Höchst district of Frankfurt. The previous clinic will be replaced by a new Passive House building with ten operating theatres and 666 beds planned over six floors. The Passive House Institute has provided comprehensive support throughout the planning phase and will continue to do so during the building’s construction.

Hospitals are known to be large energy consumers and in most European countries the high proportion of ageing building stock makes hospitals amongst the least energy efficient public buildings. Nowadays there is a growing urgency to achieve real energy savings from existing building stocks and to build more sustainable new hospitals.

Barts and the Royal London Hospitals are managed by the NHS (National Health Service) Trust, and annually care for over 700,000 people from across central London. Prior to the redevelopment, the hospitals were in acute need of modernisation and expansion following several decades of insufficient investment. The redevelopment project, launched in 2006 and managed by the Capital Hospitals consortium, will deliver modern hospitals that are more functional, more energy efficient and which promote healthy indoor environments.

The HosPilot project develops a service able to propose the most efficient technical solutions about HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) and Lighting for refurbishing a hospital. At the same time, it will help to increase well-being and comfort for the end users. The service will be distributed as a software tool designed for decision makers of hospital.
