Paul McCormack, Project coordinator, tells us more about how the project is supporting the implementation of BIM and driving digital transformation across the EU construction supply chain.   Could you describe the project and its objectives?

Two projects called BERTIM and MORE-CONNECT have demonstrated ways of retrofitting prefabricated façade and roof panels that incorporate energy efficiency improvements. This kind of offsite construction means building renovations take less time on the building site, as little as a couple of days.

BIMcert provides an easily accessible portal for training the vast middle tier of construction industry supply chain professionals of all profiles. The framework and materials supporting the portal is aimed at improving workers’ BIM, sustainable construction and energy efficiency skills, thus leading to better collaborative working that guarantees energy efficient, sustainable buildings and increased quality throughout the entire construction supply chain.

BUILD UP Skills Advisor app was first released in 2015, with the aim of providing construction workers with job-specific advice and short upskilling opportunities. By turning on the app notifications for specific techniques, the user automatically receives updates on the most current course offers as well as question sets based on practical real-life situations.

BIM4EEB is a European funded project that aims to develop a BIM-based toolkit for energy-efficient building renovation. The project has just completed the first year of activities in full steam. Along the year, project partners have run surveys, interviews, conducted researches and are now strongly engaged in the development of the BIM4EEB platform and the Building Information Modelling (BIM) toolkit.

Introduction BIM is a key part of the fourth revolution (digitalisation) of the AEC industry (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) and an enabling tool for a cleaner and more sustainable build environment.   This has been recognised by the European commission, and several H2020 funded projects, including BIMcert, are focusing in providing training frameworks and support in order to upskill the industry.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) the global buildings sector is now responsible for 36% of global final energy consumption as well as accounting for nearly 40% of total direct and indirect carbon dioxide emissions.

As part of the sustainability planning within BIMcert and with other EU BIM projects we have collaborated to form BIMalliance.  The primary aim of this is to enable BIMcert to develop an exploitation plan in collaboration with other partners. This collaboration also enables all partners in BIMalliance to share materials, modules and learning material.
