Renovating the EU building stock Deep renovation of buildings has the potential to cut 36% of their energy consumption by 2030, while reducing the EU’s dependency on imported energy, creating growth, innovation and employment, reducing fuel poverty and resulting in more comfortable and healthier buildings.

The EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) will be back for its 15th edition on 23-24-25 June 2020! The EUSEW is a month-long series of activities to build a secure energy future for Europe.   It brings together public authorities, private companies, NGOs and consumers to promote initiatives to save energy and move towards renewables for clean, secure and efficient power. It is the largest event on sustainable energy in Europe.

The Aerem Factory is the two-time winner of the Low Carbon Prize of the Green Solutions Awards, both in France and internationally.   A factory does not necessarily mean a giant carbon footprint, whether in the construction or operating phase. This is proven by this 3,800 m2 positive energy factory. Heating and cooling are generated by a geothermal heat pump. Electricity is obtained through a photovoltaic generator and waste recovery.

With over 80 million inefficient heating & cooling (HC) systems still installed across Europe motivating consumers to replace those units with more efficient, greener alternatives will be key for a decarbonised Energy Union fuelled by renewable energy. REPLACE project aims to improve coordination in local networks to implement replacement campaigns in ten target regions by means of action plans fortified with policy and business-related improvements.

The University of Environment, after winning the Energy & Hot Climates Award of the International platform, qualified in this category for the final... and won!   A minimal carbon footprint was the main objective behind the construction of this building. To achieve this, stakeholders drew inspiration from traditional constructions and uses of buildings in the region, while providing innovative solutions.

We are pleased to announce that the Renewables in Cities 2019 Global Status Report is now available!   Accounting for 55% of the world’s population, 75% of global CO2 emissions and 2/3rds of global energy demand, cities have a crucial role to play in accelerating the sustainable energy transition. While some national governments are working toward a sustainable energy system, city-level initiatives are fundamental as well, especially for transitioning local end-use sectors such as heating, cooling and transport.

Dr Christoph Gürtler, Prof Walter Leitner and Dr Berit Stange have have proven that CO2 currently emitted by industries to the atmosphere could be turned into tangible and marketable materials for future products. Researchers and industry have joined forces to turn industrial waste gases (mixed CO/CO2 steams) into intermediates for polyurethane plastics for rigid foams/building insulation and coatings.
