The ResStock analysis tool is helping states, municipalities, utilities, and manufacturers identify which home improvements save the most energy and money. With support from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), researchers at NREL developed ResStock. This project was the refurbishment of an early 19th C croft house. 3-bay, single-storey and attic, rectangular-plan crofting cottage situated on high ground overlooking Braemar village in the Cairngorms National Park. Rubble with lime render and pointing. Corrugated-iron roof covering heather thatch.   NORTH ELEVATION: Timber lean-to porch to centre, breaking eaves with timber door to left side; windows flanking. Smaller single windows to S and W elevations.

A growing body of research attaches figures to the value of benefits that energy efficiency measures deliver to public agencies, private entities, economies as a whole, and to individual citizens. Renovating private homes has a benefit-cost ratio of 4:1, reflecting reductions in healthcare expenditure, elimination of energy subsidy pay-outs, job creation and greater economic empowerment of citizens who are lifted out of energy poverty.

The Government has launched a consultation on the introduction of a “Future Homes Standard” for England, to be operable from 2025. There are to be proposed interim measures applicable from 2020. The aim is to ensure that new build homes in England will be future-proofed, with low carbon heating and world-leading levels of energy efficiency.

During the Belgian Fair for Condominiums, the ACE-Retrofitting Conference brought together Belgian and European stakeholders, from both public authorities and private entities, working in the building sector. The political debate and a practitioner experience-sharing session revealed that condominiums still are, what might be called, an orphan amongst building types.
