In that perspective, the European Green Deal, a set of policy initiatives by the European Commission with the overarching aspiration of making Europe climate neutral in 2050, aims for the EU transition to a climate neutral, modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy as well as a fair and prosperous society.

The COVID-19 crisis has brought the EU to a crossroads. We have difficult choices to make and immediate recovery measures to develop. There is a real risk that COVID-19 could take the EU backwards to political fragmentation, economic stagnation and social breakdown. Alternatively, we can choose to launch common initiatives that will bind Europeans and the European Union closer together, provide the impetus for renewed economic activity shaped by the principles of the European Green Deal while addressing the inequalities in our society in an inclusive manner.

Europe’s heating and cooling is a climate time bomb, with the sector responsible for almost half of the EU’s energy consumption and a third of its CO2 emissions. Ageing buildings bear much of the blame, with a large part of the energy used to heat our homes going to waste due to poor insulation. USGBC released four new Safety First LEED Pilot Credits in response to COVID-19 to support environmental and occupant health. The credits outline sustainable best practices that align with public health and industry guidelines related to cleaning and disinfecting, workplace reoccupancy, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning) and plumbing operations. The credits can be used by LEED projects that are certified or are undergoing certification.

The scope is to provide a set of exemplary case studies to be further replicated in order to boost the building renovation rates among the EU Member States towards the reduction of 80% of energy demand by 2050.

The renovation of the residential complex of Via Passeggiata dei Castani is one of the interventions developed within the FP7 Smart City project SINFONIA and has been concluded at the beginning of 2019.   The area is located in the east side of the city of Bolzano, under a mountain and the complex has been build in the ‘90ies. The complex is owned by the Municipality of Bolzano and it is composed by two buildings, that have 72 apartments distributed by four staircases for a total surface of 7456 m2.
