The challenges of integrating new energy-saving systems in occupied buildings
It can be extremely challenging to integrate technologies using renewables sources, such Parabolic Trough Solar Collectors (PTC), a biomass boiler, a cogeneration unit based on Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC), an absorption chiller and a cooling tower. But this challenge is even greater when these energy reduction systems need to be coupled to an existing and occupied building.

In the late 1980s, the German-born chemist Michael Grätzel literally tied his name to an invention that is hailed as a revolution in renewable energy.
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) - officially dubbed Grätzel cells to honour their creator - are transparent photovoltaic cells inspired by the way plants generate energy.

Organic Rankine Cycle uses heat in water or exhaust gases to produce electricity. Often it uses waste heat. Most engineering companies implementing ORC-solutions do so for large systems at high temperatures and pressures.
The technology is now in the making to also exploit less powerful resources at lower temperatures.

Around half of Europe’s buildings were built before 1975, in an era when energy efficiency, CO2 emissions and energy consumption were not a priority. Now a strong need arises to transform the most energy demanding buildings into energy efficient ones. Insights will be shared during a workshop held at the Warsaw Build Expo.
