Natural lime and clay based plasters are an increasingly popular choice among architects and homeowners due to their aesthetic appeal and sustainable credentials - clay plaster requires just 10% of the energy input of gypsum plaster and has 10 times lower embodied CO2.

Regulations and labelling of products have been promoted by the governments, resulting in ever more stringent specifications for the industry regarding the emission of volatile compounds from materials.

Eco-innovative, Safe and Energy Efficient wall panels and materials for a healthier indoor environment
The ECO-SEE project aims to address an emerging health problem associated with modern low carbon buildings. Modern buildings have been developed to be very airtight, improving their energy efficiency and reducing their carbon footprint. However, these sealed environments have created unexpected side effects, with research showing that a build-up of potentially harmful chemicals in the air is potentially causing negative impacts on occupants.

With energy efficiency in buildings high up on the European political agenda, Brussels is certainly the place where awareness about the importance of energy performance buildings is prominent. But less people might be aware of how much indoor air quality needs to be improved. Indoor air is 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoors, because of mould and bacteria resulting from excessive levels of humidity, and pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by furniture, cleaning products and textiles.

The school was built in 2012/13 as a public private partnership. The main energy related targets were to achieve passive house standard, to use prefabricated timber facades and renewable energy sources. The building should reach high indoor environment quality and fulfil the measures set in the Norwegian “Cities of the Future” - a collaboration between the government and the 13 largest cities in Norway to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make the cities better places to live.
