NZEB - Near Zero-Energy Buildings

NERO develops and demonstrates technical solutions, which significantly reduce the costs of new nearly Zero-Energy Wooden Buildings and districts compared to the current situation.   On site and nearby renewable energy system solutions are studied in order to provide real addition of renewable energy production and to provide solutions, which are optimal on local grid and energy system level.

Already today buildings can be realised in the nearly zero and plus energy standard. These buildings achieve extremely low energy demands and low CO2 emissions and can be operated economically. For this reason, the motivation in the CRAVEzero project is not only based on the energy characteristics of buildings, but also on their life-cycle costs.

Cost optimal and nearly zero energy performance levels are principles initiated by the European Union’s (EU) Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, which was recast in 2010 and amended 2018. These will be major drivers in the construction sector in the next few years because all new buildings in the EU from 2021 onwards are expected to be nearly zero energy buildings (nZEB).

The Oxygen Office Building project, ideally located in the city of Brussels between the Royal Park and the Squares District, and between the Arts-Loi and Maelbeek metro stations, aimed the construction of a new low footprint office building replacing one that had become obsolete.   Thanks to a staggering of the roofs, the new building joins the different reference heights of neighboring buildings. The roof also serves of support for a green roof as well as for a high yield photovoltaic production (112m² - 22.5 kWp).
