H2 Office in Duisburg: aluminium clad building goes for the Gold DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council) certification

The H2 Office lies like a moored sports catamaran in Duisburg Inner Harbor. The building's bond with nature is just as cutting-edge because the lustrous ventilated cladding made with aluminium composite material as well as the aluminium windows that are combined with external venetian blinds conceals an extremely energy efficient building, providing 11 000 square meters of work and restaurant space.

However, the second phase of construction, which was completed at the end of 2010, is also a model of sustainability. It received the DGNB – Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen e.V. (German Sustainable Building Council) gold seal of approval. The green building built by Ed. Züblin AG is distinguished by, among other things, its use of geothermal and solar energy, continuous sun-protecting and noise-reducing aluminium windows as well as intelligent building technologies.

Lessons learnt

DGNB certification considers the entire life cycle of the building, therefore special emphasis is placed on the usage phase. To choose the products that were used for cladding the external cell of the building, producers who were able to prove their continuous commitment on developing more energy efficient solutions that are developed following very strict quality procedures that respect particularly the environment were chosen. That is the reason why Environmental Product Declarations had to be provided in accordance to EN 15804.
