EXPERT TALKS is a new initiative from BUILD UP. In the form of face to face interviews, experts coming from all around Europe and covering the field of Energy Efficiency in buildings from different perspectives, will share their views, experience and expertise with BUILD UP audience. Linked to the Topic of the Month, the interview will address most relevant topics.

COVID-19 did not stop us in hosting our 3rd expert talk, even though this time it took place remotely. We had the opportunity to interview Laura Maturi, Senior Researcher at the Institute for Renewable Energy (EURAC research). She is an expert in the field of renewable energies, in particular building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and energy efficiency in buildings. Laura has participated in many national and international projects dealing with these topics, such as FP7 Solar Design, INTERREG IT-CH BIPV meets History, H2020 PV IMPACT, IEA PVPS Task 15 Enabling Framework for the Acceleration of BIPV, IEA SHC Task 51 Solar Energy and Urban Planning, IEA SHC Task 41 Solar Energy and Architecture. Since 2017 she is the coordinator of the EU-funded project H2020 EnergyMatching which aims to develop novel technologies for the retrofitting of residential buildings by maximizing the implementation of renewable energies.
During the interview Laura stressed that when talking about integration of photovoltaics, three aspects are essentials to consider for the successful design of BIPV: technology integration, aesthetic integration and energy integration. In particular, these aspects are examined in the H2020 EnergyMatching project. In this project they are developing new technologies for residential building energy retrofit, such as a new photovoltaics integration sub-structure, different kind of aesthetically appealing photovoltaic models, a solar window block (see attached pdf file). The project also focuses on energy integration of photovoltaics within the building system but also within a district.
She also presented some other EU-funded and international projects involving BIPV, such as Interreg IT-CH BIPV meets history, IEA Task 15, and H2020 BIPV Boost.
Moreover, she focused on BIPV tools to support architects and designers, case studies and the presentation of the indoor and outdoor laboratories at EURAC research and the tests taking place in them. Following are the links to these labs with description and pictures for further information:
