The Solar Decathlon title defender Technical University of Darmstadt under the lead of Prof. Hegger has won the international competition Solar Decathlon 2009 for the second time after 2007. The Solar Decathlon joins 20 college and university teams in a competition to design, build, and operate the most attractive and energy-efficient solar-powered house. It is organised by the US Department of Energy on the National Mall in Washington D.C. Photos, scores and standings are presented on the website of the competition.
The German SurPlusHouse includes photovoltaic on all walls (also on the north side as a system was chosen that can produce electricity from diffuse radiation as well) and a heat pump for heating, domestic hot water and cooling. The building is very compact and results therefore and because of the vacuum insulation in very low transmission losses.
The second place was won by the team from Illinois and the third by Team California. Learn more about the used strategies and technologies and who won the people's choice award on the website.
