Getting it Done: US Embassies in EU becoming Green using Energy Performance Contracting

Themed “Getting it Done,” the Green Embassies Workshop took place at the Paris Ambassador’s Residence on April 13, 2010. The Green Embassies workshop featured U.S. Ambassadors from the EU and other Foreign Service Officials from countries such as Germany, Finland, Sweden, and Greece. The workshop was broken down into specialized fifty-minute sessions on different strategies embassies can use to green themselves and how to fund green projects using Energy Performance Contracting (EPC).

The re-building of “Green” embassies started in the 1990’s. Per President Obama’s Green initiatives:

  1. the U.S. government will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 28% by 2020, which applies to U.S. Embassies and Missions; and
  2. the U.S. will double its green exports in five years.
“The League of Green Embassies” segment chaired by Ambassador Barzun from Stockholm, Sweden discussed practices and offered solutions on how to utilize the local public and private sectors to help green your embassy. Thirty-eight posts have joined the League of Green Embassies and Ambassador Barzun encouraged more embassies to come aboard, not only greening  themselves, but in sharing what steps they are taking to incorporate green initiatives. Every Ambassador present received a membership password and a log-on name to correspond with other embassies via the League of Green Embassies Blog to upload pictures, stories, and other information on active preparations and current projects being implemented at their embassies to go green.
