Building occupants

The energy and carbon footprint of urban areas will increase with urbanisation and the growing economic activity of urban citizens.   The decarbonisation of cities and city districts presents an imperative and an obvious area of priority.   Districts, in particular, have specific opportunities to drive the decarbonization efforts as they know best about their local needs and locally available infrastructure and resources.

A few months from now REMOURBAN will come to an end. As a farewell to its readers, the project released a brochure on its achievements and legacy   Five years have almost passed from that morning in January 2015 when REMOURBAN started taking its first steps in the smart renovation of the cities of Nottingham (UK), Tepebaşi (Turkey) and Valladolid (Spain).

The challenge The EC estimates that about 35% of the EU's buildings are over 50 years old, and almost 75% of the building stock is energy inefficient.   At the same time, only 0.4-1.2% of the building stock renovated each year (depending on the country) [1].

Much of our building stock was designed and built before global warming, environmental protection and recycling became foremost in our minds and behaviours. It represents around 40% of energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions   Revamping building envelopes, making façades and roofs more energy-efficient, is a key measure in retrofitting existing stock. Combined with a smart energy management system, building envelopes can slash energy consumption while improving indoor comfort.

Less than 2% of properties sold in Ireland between January 2017 and October 2018 were A rated – the highest energy efficient rating for homes – despite many technologies available to upgrade homes. And just 11% of dishwashers and 14% of fridges sold in 2018 in Spain were of the highest A+++ energy rating for appliances. The findings come from a project called CONSEED, which investigates what encourages people to buy energy efficient appliances, houses and cars.
