Renewable sources could cover more than one-third of energy demand across the Central and South-Eastern Europe energy connectivity (CESEC) area cost effectively by 2030, regional Renewable Energy Roadmap (REmap) analysis shows.   This study from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) offers a full energy system perspective, examining impacts on energy costs, investment plans, supply security and fossil-fuel consumption, along with, climate, the environment and people’s health.

The Climate Chance Observatory released the 2020 Edition of its Global Sector-based Synthesis Report of Climate Action and organized, for this occasion, its week of #ClimateChanceTalks in December 2020 to exchange and cross points of view of different non-state actors around the trends and progress assessed for the last 3 years.

This report is the first output of the GlobalABC “adaptation” working group, launched at COP24 in Katowice.   During the Global- ABC meeting in Rabat in October 2018, the representatives of the Kingdom of Morocco and GlobalABC members expressed their mutual wish to see the challenges of climate change adaptation and the benefits of initiatives in the real-estate, building, and construction sector be put in the spotlight, as up until now they have not been given due attention.

The COP26 climate summit hosted by the UK in November will include a focus on architecture and construction after its president Alok Sharma announced plans to include a ‘built environment day’   Sharma, who last week quit as business secretary to focus on his climate role full-time, revealed the decision in a recent letter to the World Green Building Council. In it, he said that ‘action to decarbonise the buildings and construction sector is critical to meeting our Paris Agreement goals’.

On the 16th of December 2021, hundreds of people gathered online for the launch of the European Climate Pact, an EU-wide initiative inviting people, communities and organisations to participate in climate action and build a greener Europe.    The significance of the initiative was reflected in the diversity among participants, but also in the topics addressed.

  The European Council approved the European Union’s EUR 1.82 trillion seven-year funding package and sent it to the European Parliament. The regular budget is worth EUR 1.07 trillion and the remaining EUR 750 billion is a recovery instrument called NextGenerationEU.   The bloc’s leaders called for a cut in emissions by 55% in the next decade.

States and utilities increasingly rely on energy efficiency programs to address climate change mitigation goals.   This report assesses two types of such energy efficiency programs: behavioral programs that offer savings for a relatively short time, and structural retrofit programs that offer savings over longer periods.

Although cutting emissions to net-zero by 2050 will destroy jobs and push up the costs of doing business in some sectors, it will bring gains elsewhere that will make up for the difference, according to a new study by McKinsey & company.   “Net-zero emissions by 2050 should be achievable at a net-zero cost without compromising overall economic growth or prosperity,” says the study by the global consulting firm, published on Thursday (3 December).
