The Australian government unveiled plans two months ago to impose a tax on carbon emissions from July 2012, before moving to a carbon trading system from mid-2015. "Australia's decision to put a price on carbon emissions is, in our view, an important step, both environmentally and economically," European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said on Monday after talks with Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard in Canberra.

Between 2007 and the end of 2010, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems installed and scheduled for installation in Massachusetts increased 20-fold — with jobs in solar manufacturing, installation, and services nearly tripling  while installed wind energy increased 10-fold. In that same time period, Massachusetts launched the most aggressive energy efficiency program in the U.S., with estimated savings of over $6 billion for residential, municipal, industrial and commercial customers and 4,500 jobs sustained or created.

How to help improve this calculatorCreating a low-carbon economy will require the consent and participation of citizens given the scale and pace of change required. Government can play a leadership role, but transforming our economy will require a coalition of citizens, business, and the energy industry. The DECC would like to test and refine this tool, its assumptions and its presentation, before engaging the public more widely.
