Europe’s heating and cooling is a climate time bomb, with the sector responsible for almost half of the EU’s energy consumption and a third of its CO2 emissions. Ageing buildings bear much of the blame, with a large part of the energy used to heat our homes going to waste due to poor insulation. A wave of deep renovation is desperately needed, but that is not the whole story.

Set up under the revised EU Emissions Trading System Directive, the Modernisation Fund will allocate around EUR 14 billion from the auctioning of allowances from the EU Emissions Trading System for the period 2021-2030, depending on the carbon price. Every beneficiary Member State has its own share of allowances to be used under the Modernisation Fund, as determined by the revised EU Emissions Trading System Directive.

The EU-funded RES4BUILD project is developing integrated renewable energy-based solutions that are tailored to the needs and requirements of users and installers. The project aims to increase the uptake of renewable energy solutions for heating and cooling; decarbonising the energy consumption in buildings and contributing to EU energy and climate goals.

The Upgrade DH project will support and initiate the upgrading process of eight district heating demo cases in Europe in the following countries: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Denmark, Croatia, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, and The Netherlands and will provide the basis for replication to other cities.

On 15 July 2020, the Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR) will co-host the online event “Building the future 2020 – boosting innovation in the construction industry”. Projects developing new construction materials to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings and fostering a circular economy will show how this industry can become more sustainable. The event also concludes the EU project INNOVIP.

The announcement of the European Green Deal Investment Plan in January revealed the European Commission’s priorities in mobilizing at least €1 trillion in sustainable investment over the next decade, with the aim of creating a framework to facilitate public and private investments in the service of a climate-neutral, competitive, and inclusive European economy.

This report by UNA-UK addresses the implementation of the climate deal agreed by UN member states in Paris in 2015.   The report is the fifth in a series of major reports on the Paris Agreement on climate change. It is the year that carbon emissions must peak and the year that states’ climate actions agreed under their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Climate Treaty start.

This report presents a comparison of 8 scenarios achieving more than 50% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared to 1990, and 16 scenarios aiming at climate neutrality by 2050, similar with the ambitions of the “European Green Deal”. This report summarises insights into similar and diverging elements of the scenarios on how the EU energy system may change by 2030 and by 2050, compared to today.
