EMIRI - The Energy Materials Industrial Research Initiative, set up in 2012, is driving forward research and innovation in the advanced materials for low-carbon energy applications. Innovative energy technologies are required to cost-effectively meet Europe's energy and climate change challenges. These technologies will be enabled by the introduction of new, advanced materials.

Since the start of All Saints' Day 2017, students in Secondary 5 and 6 of the College "Notre-Dame de bon secours" in Binche are the first in Belgium to take classes in a building isolated with straw and wooden frame.
A spacious, bright, and healthy pavilion has replaced a prefabricated sheet metal energy wastage. This pavilion is the first prefabricated school building made of wood, compressed straw and clay plaster in French-speaking Belgium.

Bamboo always has been a basic construction material in tropical latitudes. But generally it has been used for inexpensive shacks, stalls, fences, scaffolding and sunscreens. If not treated, bamboo is highly susceptible to fire and naturally degrades within two or three years, because insects and fungi rapidly devour the sugar-and-starch-rich sap inside the canes.

Construction industry stakeholders and policy makers gathered on 29 January in Brussels to discuss the potential of natural bio-based materials to help Europe meet its climate obligations.
The event was organised by the Horizon 2020 project ISOBIO, which hopes its innovations will be a game changer for bio-based construction.
