Concept:   The achievement of the EU climate targets for 2030 will be facilitated by the widespread adoption of renewable energy. Hosting capacity can be reached through the market uptake of citizen energy communities (CEC).   The EU-funded LIGHTNESS project will increase the renewable energy capacity through social engagement, a regulatory roadmap, a low-cost technological package and innovative business models.

Nestled in the heart of a residential neighbourhood in the north of Brussels, the project closes off a fairly diverse square with a parking lot at its centre, and faces a large church and an uninteresting housing structure.   The buildings are set back far enough to avoid creating an out-of-place profile and maintain continuity with the existing buildings on Rue Saints Pierre et Paul, while also taking advantage of the south-facing slope of the terrain.

The new CHARIER headquarters in Coueron, was developed to bring the location of business decisions closer to the main partners and customers of the company.   The main features of the building, designed by Paumier Architectes, aims to represent the company specificities and strengths. In fact, the composition of the construction is around a courtyard that highlights the know-how of the company adjoining the building's exhibition hall.

This tool has been eveloped within the H2020 project EnerGAware with the scope of decreasing energy consumption and emissions to increase the affordable housing tenants’ understanding and engagement in energy efficiency.   To cope the issue, the project developed serious game, the Energy Cat Game, where the player will take the role of a cat who dreams about living in the house of tomorrow : a house both energy efficient and comfortable.

Innsbruck is one of the pilot cities of the FP7 project SINFONIA, and selected its eastern district to demonstrate the large scale implementation of energy efficient measures, with the objective of achieving on average 40 – 50% primary energy savings in the demo sites and to increase at least by 30% the share of renewables in the district’s energy mix.

In the last decade, energy efficiency (EE) has been considered as one of the major tools for addressing climate change, as it allows to reduce energy consumption (depending mainly from imported fossil fuels) and, therefore, also greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. For this precise reason, and given the growing environmental concern among society, EE has been integrated first in the EU 2020 goals and hereafter in the EU 2030 goals, both defining specific targets in terms of CO2 emissions, renewable energy use in power generation, and EE.
