Data is fundamental to understand how much a building consumes, how much it is efficient and whether thermal comfort is adequate. However, how should this data be evaluated? Is it still possible to increase energy efficiency of buildings? A solution would be to make a comparison with similar contexts: for example, how much does a building consume on average under specific climatic conditions? How much energy can it obtain from its installed renewable energy sources?

A recent study carried out by an international group of building scientists showed that Estonia is among the countries with the most energy efficient buildings in Europe.
Among the analysis of NZEB energy performance of buildings in four countries (Estonia, Norway, Finland and Sweden), Estonia has shown to have the most energy efficient nearly zero energy buildings.

Collectively, buildings in the EU are responsible for 40% of our energy consumption and 36% of greenhouse gas emissions, which mainly stem from construction, usage, renovation and demolition. Improving energy efficiency in buildings therefore has a key role to play in achieving the ambitious goal of carbon-neutrality by 2050, set out in the European Green Deal.

Primary energy consumption in the EU was 4.9% above the efficiency target for 2020, Eurostat said, while final energy consumption – at the consumer level – was slightly better, at 3.2% above benchmark. The EU has an energy efficiency target of reducing energy consumption by 20% by 2020 but it has consistently underperformed in meeting that objective.

Only a drastic reduction in global energy demand will allow an affordable manageable transition to a global energy system based on renewables and ambitious energy efficiency measures are key to meet sustainability goals. Global growth in energy use is largely outpacing decarbonisation and in 2018, primary energy intensity – an important indicator of how much energy is used by the global economy – improved by just 1.2%, the slowest rate since 2010.
