A greater uptake of smart technologies is expected to lead to significant, cost-effective energy savings, while also helping to improve indoor comfort in a manner that enables the building to adjust to the needs of the user.
Smart buildings have also been identified and acknowledged as key enablers of future energy systems for which there will be a larger share of renewables, distributed supply and demand-side energy flexibility.

How and where to invest in Energy Efficiency: Energy Conservation Measures
When we start an energy efficiency project, as a first step, it is recommended to carry out actions that improve the energy behaviour of users.
In general, behavioural improvements are not sufficient to achieve the savings targets that were set, and we need to implement other Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs).

Overall environmental impacts of nZEBs are substantially lower than conventional buildings. This is the conclusion of a new AZEB study in which the environmental performance of 3 AZEB case studies was evaluated using life cycle assessment (LCA).
The combination of LCA with optimization methods facilitates decisions to minimize environmental impacts of nZEBs, while keeping the costs as low as possible.

The right performance of a building directly relates to higher comfort and thus to better living conditions for the users. Less unexpected maintenance costs and improved comfort conditions positively influence the real estate value and occupancy rate.
This is the conclusion of the AZEB study ‘Real Estate Value and Occupancy Rate in nZEBs’. It demonstrates how the AZEB methodology effects these values, now and in future.

AZEB studied the use of indicators for measuring the social performance of a building. The social performance of two AZEB case studies, in Spain and Bulgaria, was investigated.
The study shows how the European standard could aid decision making for cost-effective nZEB development.

Much of our building stock was designed and built before global warming, environmental protection and recycling became foremost in our minds and behaviours. It represents around 40% of energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions
Revamping building envelopes, making façades and roofs more energy-efficient, is a key measure in retrofitting existing stock. Combined with a smart energy management system, building envelopes can slash energy consumption while improving indoor comfort.

As part of the klimaaktiv program "energy-efficient companies” this tool has been created in order to facilitate the energy management of companies to meet energy standards.

Concept and Objectives
The main goal of QUEST is to promote investments in Sustainability and Energy Efficiency by identifying and empirically risk-grading factors that influence performance.
QUEST will develop a simple toolkit to evaluate these investments. It may be easily applied to all types of Sustainability and Energy Efficiency investments and covers project design-construction-operation risks.
