Buildings are one of the main causes of the emission of greenhouse gases in the world; in Europe, for example, they are responsible for more than 30% of emissions, or about 900 million tons of CO2 per year. Heating and air conditioning are mainly responsible for greenhouse gas emissions in buildings.

The Latvian GDP grew by 4.8% during 2018, the highest GDP growth rate since 2010. The growth was driven by consumer spending and strong investment levels supported by EU fund inflows.

In Bulgaria, around 1,400 buildings are being renovated and retrofitted since 2017 according to the Bulgarian Construction Chamber (BCC) as nearly 70% of the building stock was built before 1979.   The successful improvement of building performance and the adoption of renewable energy are especially challenging due to the skills shortage in the Bulgarian construction sector – a sector which accounts for 14.4% of Bulgarian GDP.

In 2018, primary energy intensity – an important indicator of how much energy is used by the global economy – improved by 1.2%, the slowest rate since 2010. This was slower than the 1.7% improvement in 2017 and marked the third year in a row the rate has declined. It was also well below the average 3% improvement consistent with the IEA Efficient World Strategy.

What drives us? The data is bleak. The trend lines are blinding. Any sane person would have thrown in the towel. So why do we keep showing up?   Hope.
