eu.bac welcomes the 2021 revision of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, which has become necessary in light of the increased ambition agreed in the Renovation Wave. To meet EU climate targets and fully decarbonise the building stock by 2050, stronger measures must be put in place at the European level.   In this paper, we provide our initial suggestions. We have structured our suggestions in 6 chapters, each containing specific policy recommendations:

The perception of risk surrounding building renovation operations is an important driver in most of the energy efficiency related financing operations. However, investment decisions in building renovation are still largely based on empirical methods which rely solely on company business specific experiences.   The investment market is calling for solid knowledge-based evaluation methods to perform technical/ financial due-diligence and evaluate financial operations related to energy-efficient buildings.

Friday 11th June 2021, 14:00-16:30 CET   Extensive research studies in many countries have found gaps between the design intent and real-world operation of buildings, which often lead to much higher energy use in practice than was estimated at design stage. While the reasons for such performance gaps are varied and complex, IEA Energy in Buildings and Communities (EBC) research projects have recently been making progress in resolving them.

The attached infographics made by the TripleA-reno project show some interesting insights about the project.   TripleA-reno is a H2020 EU-funded project running from May 2018 until April 2021. It raises awareness and provides guidance on the different phases of the renovation process for decision makers, such as designers, architects, engineers, customers, homeowners, building managers.

The European Union aims to be climate-neutral by 2050, requiring a fundamental transformation of the construction and building sectors. This decade is critical as direct building CO2 emissions need to more than halve by 2030 to get on track for a net-zero carbon building stock by 2050.
