Humans have been trying to realize the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change of net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphereby maintaining global warming below 2° Celsius and capping it at 1.5 C.   To date, the efforts have been centered mainly on de-carbonizing the two economic sectors- electric power and transportation as they are responsible for the most emissions.

Renewable and waste heat sources are foreseen at the same time as decarbonized heat sources and the way to guarantee competitive energy costs with limited influence of fossil fuel supply price volatility. To achieve this, a transition is needed in DHs, comprising not only measures to improve overall performance (temperature level reductions, improvement of substations, etc.), but to guarantee system viability as a whole in a context of reduced heat loads with the transition to Near Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB).

“Cooling is a major source of energy consumption in tropical countries like Singapore and will be a key factor in deciding whether nations meet their environmental obligations,” said Pierre Cheyron, CEO, ENGIE South East Asia.   ENGIE has been selected by the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) to construct the district cooling system (DCS) for its new campus at Punggol Digital District.

The Slovenian parliament passed a motion to adopt an EIT Climate-KIC-led proposal called “A Deep Demonstration of a Circular, Regenerative and Low-Carbon Economy in Slovenia” last November. The initiative is one of eight Deep Demonstrations launched by EIT Climate-KIC, which together offer a test bed environment for the ambitious, “1.5-consistent systems transitions” called for by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports, activists, national and European policy.
