To further support the energy transition in the building sector, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy have launched a funding initiative entitled “Solar Building / Energy-Efficient City”. More than 60 consortia from municipal administrations, research institutes and companies have applied for government funding.

The European Innovation Platform on Smart Cities and Communities (EIP-SCC) held theirgeneral assembly in Eindhoven, The Netherlands late this May. The event was a melting pot of ideas, people and policy trying to make sense of and give direction to the smart city movement.    For commissioner Violeta Bulc, the purpose and benefits of smarter cities is clear “Cleaner air, safer transport networks, reducing congestion, optimising use of existing infrastructure – these are just some of the reasons why smart city development is so important.” she said.
