27 European heads of state are discussing the Commission’s proposal for a €1.85 trillion COVID-19 recovery budget. It is a huge sum: €1.1 trillion from the member states themselves and €750 billion to be borrowed on the capital markets. But it is dwarfed by something which is all around us and which we take for granted: buildings.

Buildings account for more than one-third of global carbon emissions. Five years after the Paris Climate Agreement, it is high time to act. To facilitate this process, the IGBC call on Irish businesses and cities to take a leadership role and to sign up to the Advancing Net Zero Commitment. The commitment, which aims to see 100% uptake of net zero carbon buildings by 2050, challenges businesses and cities to ensure that all buildings they own, occupy and/or develop operate at net zero carbon by 2030.

The 15th edition of the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) will be held as a digital event, the first one ever since EUSEW started in 2006.   The biggest event dedicated to renewables and efficient energy use in Europe is scheduled to take place from 22 to 26 June 2020, online and under a new theme: Beyond the crisis: clean energy for green recovery and growth.
