The BUILD UP portal is listed as one of the partners of this edition of the Mediterranean Climate Change Adaptation Awards. Focusing on adaptation measures in the Building and construction sectors, this new edition will mobilise all the actors involved in adapting to climate change in the countries of the Mediterranean basin and will highlight their projects. It will reward exemplary and reproducible practices, concerning buildings, infrastructures and facilities designed or renovated in a resilient manner.

What types of climate change adaptation action can be entered in this competition?

The Mediterranean Climate Change Adaptation Awards will reward exemplary climate change adaptation actions taking place in that region.

The actions must have been implemented or be in progress (projects that have not been launched will not be admissible) and present measurable outcomes in terms of adaptation to climate change.

Actions should cover buildings, equipment, infrastructure and facilities related to the construction sector. They can fall under different approaches and typologies :

  • "Grey" solutions: For example, we can mention urban planning actions aiming to improve summer thermal comfort or rainwater management, integrated coastal zone management actions, building adaptation actions (insulation, shading solutions, natural ventilation, bioclimatic design, etc), actions aiming to reinforce the robustness of networks and infrastructures to climatic events...
  • “Green" solutions: Examples include: urban cooling actions based on ecosystems (soil, water, vegetation), development actions to promote ecological continuity, actions to control the demand for drinking water or to mobilise alternative resources, greening of roofs and facades, etc.
  • Soft solutions: For example, we can mention: research programmes, territorial observation programmes, nudge practices/changes in working hours, "cold" audits, actions aimed at training/raising awareness/commitment of actors and decision-makers in the territories, incentive and/or regulatory actions, actions aimed at integrating climate change into public policies...

Candidates are able to submit several applications files if they wish to do so.

Benefits of entering the competition

The awards ceremony will take place on 11th May 2023, during the Second Edition of the meetMED Weeks held in Marrakech (Morocco) from 9 to 12 May.

The finalists (the 3 best applications) will receive a diploma and benefit from national and international exposure, thanks to widespread promotion by ADEME and its Mediterranean & International partners, in particular via:

  • Support from the partners
  • Invitations to an international workshop
  • International promotion of your actions (press communications, dedicated publication…).

The aim of these awards is to encourage other territories to adapt to climate change by drawing inspiration from the winning projects. Previous editions have identified and highlighted over 100 projects from 18 countries around the Mediterranean. This special edition of the Mediterranean Climate Change Adaptation Awards is an opportunity to raise awareness of the urgent need to take action, for the building sector, and the importance of working together to create inspiring and innovative solutions that can be used throughout the region.
