Gamification to learn about energy usage in schools

Can gamification help estimate building consumption and promote energy-conscious behaviours in young people? Yes, according to the STARDUST project.

An educational gamification activity was organised at Liceo Rosmini in Trento during October and November 2023 by Eurac Research, the project coordinator. Employing gamification elements, classes engaged in a challenge to accurately estimate their school building's energy consumption.

Split into groups, students used smart plugs to measure appliance consumption and an interactive web tool to understand how personal behaviour influences energy usage.

The initiative, co-developed with the local Environmental Protection Agency (APPA), received positive feedback for its hands-on approach, motivating students to actively discuss about energy conservation and equipping them with practical skills to monitor energy consumption also at home.
