A reactor-based heating plant to provide residential and district heating in Finland

A reactor-based heating plant is currently under construction and will provide residential and district heating.

The project will advance the district heating of the area and support the decarbonisation and electrification targets. The heating plant will be powered by a small nuclear reactor and will produce heat at a much lower temperature than traditional reactors. Operating at a lower preassure compared to a district heating network, it is thereby safer in case of leaking which would be limited to the heating plant.

The firm responsible for this development says that there are currently around 3,500 district heating networks in Europe serving around 60,000 people. Decarbonising residential heating therefore represents and economic opportunity, while electrification will also lead to less CO2 emissions. At the moment 75% of district heating network are powered by fossil-fuel. These new type of reactors are a low-carbon alternative which is also more affordable compared to traditional ones.
