A report on sustainable management of construction and demolition waste
The European Commission is prioritising the management of Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW), which constitutes nearly 40% of all waste in the EU. Legislative actions are being taken to ensure environmentally sound practices and promote the circular economy.
A recent report “Techno-economic and environmental assessment of construction and demolition waste management in the European Union” assesses CDW generation, composition, and management, favouring recycling and reuse over incineration and landfilling due to environmental benefits.
Despite increased costs, the shift promises positive societal gains. With the potential to recycle 83% of CDW, significant CO2 equivalent savings could be achieved, emphasising the importance of promoting reuse alongside recycling for maximising environmental and economic benefits.
