The Indian government is planning to revise the building energy codes of both commercial and residential buildings in order to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions. Currently codes are mandatory for commercial buildings, but the amendment act would also include residential buildings to have mandatory codes.

The codes are being revised to reach beyond the green building standards, as they would now look also at embedded carbon, waste management, net zero and sustainable buildings.
