TREASURE project: Demonstrating large pit thermal energy storages for sustainable district heating networks

Introducing the TREASURE project, a European Union research project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme.

To establish a fully green energy system in Europe, flexible energy management is vital, especially with intermittent sources like wind and solar.

The goal of the TREASURE project is to bridge the gap between research and practice to ensure robust, safe, cost-effective and sustainable large-scale thermal energy storage; and develop secure and smart system integration concepts and increase the effectiveness of realising pit thermal energy storage (PTES) technology in Europe.

Through 7 demonstration projects across five countries, TREASURE is refining storage techniques collaboratively, leveraging data from existing projects for continuous improvement. With diverse partners including suppliers, builders, researchers, and energy firms, it aims to streamline the implementation of over 2000 storages, crucial for achieving a carbon-free energy system.

The project was kicked off on March 5th 2024, in Graz, Austria.
